Which State Doesn't Border the Atlantic: New Jersey, Delaware, or Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania is the only one of the three that does not border the Atlantic Ocean.
Coastal Geography
- New Jersey: 130 mi of Atlantic coastline (Monmouth to Cape May). Barrier islands, bays, estuaries.
- Delaware: 28 mi of Atlantic coast (Fenwick Island to Cape Henlopen). Small but strategic—Delaware Bay entrance.
- Pennsylvania: Zero ocean frontage. Its water boundaries are:
- Lake Erie (northwest, 51 mi shoreline)
- Delaware River (east, tidal to Trenton—but river, not ocean)
- Ohio River system (west/south)
Why It Matters
Pennsylvania's lack of coastline shaped its history: no major colonial ports (Philadelphia is riverine), late naval development, inland-focused economy (coal, steel, rail). Yet the Delaware River gave it tidal access to the Atlantic—making Philadelphia a global port 100 mi inland.
