Nevada: Western, Not Southwestern, United States
Regional Classification Clarified
Nevada is not part of the Southwestern U.S. It is firmly in the Western (or Intermountain West / Great Basin) region.
Standard Census Bureau Regions
- West: WA, OR, CA, NV, ID, MT, WY, UT, CO, AZ, NM, AK, HI.
- Southwest (Subregion of West): Typically AZ, NM, UT, CO (Four Corners core). Sometimes includes S. NV, S. CA, W. TX.
Why Nevada is "West" not "Southwest"
- Latitude: Mostly 37°–42°N. Southwest core is 31°–37°N.
- Climate: Great Basin Desert (cold winter desert, sagebrush) vs. Sonoran/Chihuahuan (hot subtropical deserts) of AZ/NM.
- Hydrology: Internal drainage (no river reaches sea) – hallmark of Great Basin. SW rivers (Colorado, Rio Grande) flow to sea.
- Culture/History: Mining, ranching, Basque sheepherding, atomic testing, gaming (Reno/Las Vegas). Distinct from Hispanic/Native Pueblo Southwest.
- Vegas Exception: Las Vegas (south tip) has Southwest vibe (Mojave Desert, Colorado River/Lake Mead), but the state as a whole is Western.
Better Classification for Nevada
- Intermountain West (between Rockies & Sierra/Cascades).
- Great Basin (hydrographic province).
- Mountain West (political/sports).
