Both the airplane and helicopter programs at WNC Aviation consist of classwork, or "ground" training, designed to help students pass the written test needed before they are allowed to take to the air. Coursework consists of footage of flights, simulated flying, quizzes, tests and other various lessons. These courses are taught by experts in the aviation industry, all of whom are licensed pilots. All of WNC's training is conducted on an one-on-one basis, meaning an instructor only teaches one student at a time.
WNC Aviation offers training in either school-owned or student-owned aircraft. According to the WNC Aviation website, all flight training is conducted in "real world conditions at a controlled airport" with open, low-trafficked air space. WNC Aviation uses Cessna airplanes for its flight training. Students are tested on all aspects of handling a plane or helicopter, such as taking off, landing and how to operate the engine and controls.
WNC Aviation provides a program for students who are from outside the United States, in which the school trains aspiring pilots "from around the world to fly the industry's most advanced aircrafts," according to its website. The program also teaches international students English-speaking skills, particularly as they apply to aviation.
After completing ground and in-air training, WNC Aviation students must pass the FAA written exam. Aspiring pilots can take the exam at the Asheville Regional Airport following registration. To register, students need to call WNC Aviation to set up a day and time to take the exam. They will also need to provide a government-issued identification card (such as a driver's license). Students are allowed to use calculators and other flight-planning materials while taking the exam.
WNC Aviation offers financial aid for students wishing to participate in their pilot programs, using either Bank of America or Pilot Finance, Inc. Also, students who are members of the military (or former members), can apply for financial aid to WNC Aviation through the GI-Bill.
