Anchorage Flight Schools

Alaska has the highest per capita rate of private pilots of any state in the nation. "Fly the bush" is an often heard statement in the Great Land and many Alaskan pilots routinely fly deep into the Alaskan wilderness. If you have a desire to learn to fly in the Last Frontier, consider basing your studies out of Anchorage, the state's largest city. There are three different locales within the greater Anchorage area where training is available, including float-sea plane endorsements, tail-dragger training and mountain and glacier flying and landing.
  1. Merrill Field

    • Several flight schools offer training out of Merrill Field, the smaller air field in Anchorage. Merrill Field provides a more intimate setting for beginning pattern work -- the process of learning take-offs, landings, and go-arounds. Merrill Field is on the north end of the city, between the Fairview and Mountain View neighborhoods. Take Flight Alaska offers a full range of flight training options such as private pilot, sport and recreational pilot, multi-engine and mountain flying endorsements.

    Stephens International Airport

    • Ted Stephens International Airport is the city's largest airport and serves major airlines from all over the world. Several flight schools operate out of this busy hub, providing students with full pilotage and communications training to talk with the tower in the controlled airspace. If your flight dreams include wanting to become a professional pilot, training in a large commercial airport is a baptism by fire experience. Aero Tech, based at Merrill Field, offers training in the busy patterns of Ted Stephens International Airport.

    Lake Hood

    • Lake Hood is a small man-made lake designed for seaplane takeoffs, landings and training. If you have a desire to learn to fly the seaplanes with the floats, look at flight schools offering training at Lake Hood in Anchorage. Expect to deal with the busy air traffic patterns of Ted Stephens Airport as you take off and land at the lake, eventually gaining the skills to fly you out of the city and into the wilderness. Seaplanes North offers flight training and seaplane endorsements.

    Things to Consider

    • There is no lack of flying resources in Alaska, with much of it based in Anchorage. Training out of Anchorage provides you with the necessary skills to navigate safely through the mountains, glaciers and wilderness. When beginning any flight training you need a current FAA - AIM regulations book, flight books for ground school, E6B flight computer or hand-held flight calculator and the local aviation chart. In this case, you need the FAA Anchorage aeronautic chart. Having a background knowledge of weather behavior, mountains and backcountry safety are crucial aspects of flight training out of the city.
