Rivers Bordering New York: Three Majors, Not Four

New York State is bordered by three major rivers—not four. The claim of four likely conflates border rivers with major internal rivers.

🗺️ The Three Border Rivers

RiverBorder SegmentLength on BorderNeighbor
Hudson RiverManhattan (west) → Albany (east)~150 mi (tidal to Troy)New Jersey (lower); separates NY counties (upper)
Niagara RiverLake Erie → Lake Ontario36 miOntario, Canada
St. Lawrence RiverLake Ontario → NE corner (45th parallel)~130 miOntario/Quebec, Canada

Note: The Hudson forms the NY/NJ border only from NYC to the NY/CT/MA tri-point. North of there, it's entirely within NY.

🚫 The "Fourth" Candidates (Internal, Not Borders)

  • Mohawk River: Major Hudson tributary — **entirely within NY** (Rome → Cohoes). Erie Canal follows it.
  • Genesee River: PA → NY → Lake Ontario (Rochester) — internal.
  • Delaware River: Borders **PA & NJ** — touches NY only at **tri-point (Port Jervis)**; not a NY border.
  • Susquehanna / Chemung / Allegheny: Headwaters in NY — flow to PA/MD.

💧 Other Border Waters

  • Lake Erie / Lake Ontario: Water borders (Canada).
  • Lake Champlain: Border with Vermont (narrow NE corner).
  • Long Island Sound: Border with CT (north shore of LI).
  • Atlantic Ocean: South shore of Long Island.

**Three rivers form NY's interstate/international borders:** Hudson, Niagara, St. Lawrence. The Mohawk is its mightiest *internal* river.
