Casper has a rich history that stretches back to the pioneer days and the Oregon Trail. Naturally, there are a variety of museums and other historical attractions that showcase the city's heritage. For example, the Fort Caspar Museum recreates an old fort as it existed in 1865. The Historic Trails Interpretive Center gives you the history behind famous trails like the Oregon Trail, the Pony Express Trail and the California Gold Rush Trail, while Historic Trails West lets you ride them on horseback or in covered wagons. The Salt Creek Museum covers the history of the Salt Creek oilfields and Casper's time as a boom town. Historic walking tours of the city center are also available. .
If you're in Casper in the winter, you'll have the opportunity to participate in sports like skiing. Hogadon Ski Area is conveniently located 11 miles outside of town. The ski area features 600 vertical feet of trails for skiers and snowboarders, plus lessons to help beginners find their footing on the slope. If you prefer cross-country skiing, the Casper Nordic Center on Casper Mountain has 26 miles of trails for you to roam.
Since it's located along the North Platte River in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Casper has been blessed with an abundance of nearby outdoor activities. For example, rainbow trout and brown trout thrive in the North Platte River, making it a haven for fly fishermen. Hiking is available along the North Platte River, on Casper Mountain and in the city's parks. Hunting is also popular, particularly for pronghorn antelope, mule deer and elk. Or, you can relax with a day on the greens at one of the city's four golf courses.
Casper is quite proud of its Old West heritage. For the full cowboy experience, visit the city when a rodeo is in town. The College National Finals Rodeo is in town in June, while the Central Wyoming State Fair and Rodeo happens in July. If you'd prefer to visit in the fall, the Chris LeDoux Tribute Rodeo happens every November.
