Ice fishing is one way to spend an afternoon in snowy Russia. Russia has many rivers, lakes and water reservoirs in which to ice fish. Ice fishing is a popular sport in Russia and the fishing season generally lasts from December until March, about four months of fishing. Many areas in Russia offer ice fishing competitions, which typically draw a large gathering of interested onlookers, as well as those participating in the fishing. Other outdoor winter sports that people in Russia enjoy are skiing and snowboarding. There are resorts in parts of Russia that offer incredible skiing and snowboarding. Southern Russia is home to the Caucusus Mountains, where Russia's tallest mountain, Mount Elbrus, 18,480 ft.) is located. Skiing and snowboarding are activities that many tourists enjoy year round. Certain areas of Russia offer heli-skiing which is becoming increasingly popular.
Russia hosts winter festivals, from December 25 to January 5m that include traditional Russian activities such as sleigh rides, dancing, music and shows. Many Russians celebrate New Year's Eve twice, on January 1 publicly, and January 14 with close friends and family. Moscow, St. Petersburg and Novgorod host large celebrations with music, food and fireworks. Perhaps one of the most well-known festivals in Russia is the Maslyanitsa Festival. This is the official good-bye to winter and is held every year in February, a week before Lent. This celebration is a week-long event in which people in many different towns serve pancakes laced with honey and rich cream, caviar and butter. The meals are served outdoors with music, dancing, costumes and special activities for children.
Dog sledding is one way to see the wild and untamed side of Russia. Russia is home to several popular international dog sled races. Many vacationers participate in dog sledding tours, which last anywhere from one to ten days. An instructor conducts the tour, along with an assistant. The sled is usually pulled by huskies that are divided into pairs. The participants get several days of training before heading out into the wilderness, as they are permitted to drive the dog sled themselves. Dog sledding is a favorite with adventurous people who enjoy the outdoors.
