Winter Activities in Minnesota

Minnesota experiences dramatic temperature changes and along with their hot summers, the state has very cold winters, with temperatures often below freezing. Residents and tourists in the state of Minnesota can participate in a variety of recreational and sporting activities during the winter months. These activities often require specific equipment and weather conditions.

  1. Ice Fishing

    • Ice fishing is a family friendly activity that can be both relaxing and exciting. In order to ice fish, individuals must have a fishing license, a lake that is fully frozen, an auger to cut a hole, bait, a fishing rod and five gallon pail. It's important to take the proper safety precautions when going ice fishing, which means wearing warm clothing, bringing snacks and fishing with a companion. Ice fishing can be done on any of the numerous lakes in the state that have fish. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources states that ice needs to be at least 4 inches thick for individuals to safely fish.

    Snowmobiling

    • The state of Minnesota features over 20,000 miles of trails for snowmobilers to ride, which are maintained by club volunteers. There are different trails for beginner and advanced riders and even areas where expert riders can perform tricks and other more challenging moves. The state puts stickers on all the operating and maintained trails to ensure rider safety. Trails can take riders into nearly every part of the state, and there are many hotels, restaurants, cabins, pubs and towns that cater to snowmobiling enthusiasts.

    Skiing

    • There are also various ski resorts in the state of Minnesota that offer accommodations, dining establishments, spas and skiing and snowboarding trails. Most of these mountains have trails for both beginner and expert skiers and snowboarders, and provide instructors to teach novices how to participate in these sports. State residents or frequent visitors can purchase seasonal passes, which allow skiers and snowboarders to visit a resort as much as possible.
