Trails at these resorts are available for beginners, intermediate riders, advanced riders and experts. Equipment can be rented at these locations, and lodging is also available for those who want to spend a week or weekend at a resort. Those who have little to no experience can enroll in beginner classes and learn to ski or snowboard under the instruction of a professional.
Cross-country skiing in Western Pennsylvania is available at Kooser State Park and Forbes State Park, and offers individuals a chance to ski on well-groomed trails. While cross-country skiing is not as popular as downhill skiing or snowboarding, it does offer numerous aerobic benefits and strengthens a skier’s back, legs, shoulders, chest and arms. According to New Fitness, cross-country skiers can burn between 600 to 900 calories per hour. While individuals may have to rent or buy the necessary equipment, cross-country skiing in state parks is free and offers a lower risk of injury than downhill skiing or snowboarding.
Residents and tourists in Western Pennsylvania can ice skate outdoors during the winter. The Rink at PPG Place, located in downtown Pittsburgh, has been offering ice skating opportunities for the past 10 years. As of 2010, admission is $7 for adults and $6 for children and senior citizens. Skaters can bring their own skates or rent them for $3. The rink is available for groups and private parties, and lessons are offered for skaters at any level.
Ice skating is also available at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh, and admission is $4 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and children. Skates can be rented for $2.50 and special events are held at the rink, including Skate with Santa, Mascot Skate and Valentines on Ice.
