Where in South America does chinchillas live?

Chinchillas are native to the high Andes Mountains of South America, specifically in Chile, Bolivia, Peru, and parts of Argentina. They typically inhabit rocky and mountainous areas with sparse vegetation at elevations of 1,500 to 5,000 meters. Chinchillas live in burrows or crevices among rocks and have adapted well to the harsh and cold conditions of the Andean highlands.
