The Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) are an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean, not on the South American continent. They lie on the Patagonian Shelf, ~480 km (300 mi) east of Argentina's coast.
Latitude Range: 51°20′ S to 52°30′ S
Longitude Range: 57°40′ W to 61°30′ W
Capital: Stanley (51°42′ S, 57°51′ W).
Climate Context: At 52°S, they share latitude with southern Chile/Argentina (Punta Arenas, Ushuaia) and the South Georgia Island group—but are oceanic, not continental, giving them a cool, windy, maritime climate (avg 5–9°C / 41–48°F year-round).
Sovereignty: UK Overseas Territory (claimed by Argentina). Population: ~3,500 (mostly Stanley).
