Is South Ossetia a sovereign state?

The status of South Ossetia is disputed. It is recognized as an independent state by Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru, and Syria. The United Nations, the European Union, and most countries do not recognize South Ossetia as an independent state and consider it to be part of Georgia.
