What are the characteristics of tidewater region?

The Tidewater Region of Virginia has a low and mostly flat topography. The rivers in this region are very deep and navigable, and the land area is often dotted with marshes and swamps resulting from the convergence of the water in the region. There are also few natural harbors, but large estuaries are suitable for sea vessels; this accounts for the development of harbors and maritime trade in the Tidewater Region. The soil is sandy and silty, and it provides a good environment for farming of tobacco and cotton, two major crops in the Tidewater Region.
