The United Kingdom: A Sovereign State, Not Ruled by Any Other Country

No country has ever ruled the United Kingdom. The UK is itself a sovereign state—a union of four nations:

  • England
  • Scotland
  • Wales
  • Northern Ireland

Historical Formation

  • 1536/1542: Laws in Wales Acts – Wales incorporated into England.
  • 1707: Acts of Union – England + Scotland = Great Britain.
  • 1801: Act of Union – Great Britain + Ireland = United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
  • 1922: Irish Free State secedes; 1927 renamed United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Sovereignty

The UK Parliament (Westminster) is supreme. Devolved legislatures (Scottish Parliament, Senedd Cymru, Northern Ireland Assembly) have delegated powers. The Crown (monarch) is head of state. The UK is a founding UN, NATO, G7, Commonwealth member—never a colony or subject state.
