Determine who in your party is able to climb the dune and who wants to continue across to the lake side. The dune climb area provides picnic tables, a book store and modern restrooms for those wanting to watch the fun from the bottom.
Keep shoes with you. Even though the initial climb seems fun in bare feet, the sand gets very hot and sharp blades of grass across the top can be hazardous.
Drink plenty of water along the way. The dune area between the initial climb and the lake is much like a desert area. Staying well hydrated is key especially in hot summer months.
Plan your climb with the rest of your party. The hike to the lake is 3.5 miles and can take up to four hours depending on your stamina and speed. Those staying behind need to know if you are continuing across and what time you plan to meet up.
Stay on the trail. It is tempting to walk along the ridges, or climb up and down the steepest dunes. This can be hazardous as sand can give way especially in the cooler weather. Staying on the trail also helps prevent erosion.
Carry a map of the trail system. It's easy to get turned around in unfamiliar areas, so keep a map with you at all times.
Take is easy. Trying to take the hike across the dunes too fast will result in exhaustion. Pace yourself, drink plenty of water, rest often and your trip will be both fun and rewarding.
