Campsites Near Sleeping Bear Dunes in Michigan

Sleeping Bear Dunes is a designated national lakeshore operated by the National Park Service. This park spans 35 miles of shoreline along Lake Michigan in the northern Lower Peninsula. There are a number of campgrounds near the dunes so travelers can relax after a long day of playing along the sandy shores.
  1. Platte River Campground

    • Platte River Campground has regular campsites that can accommodate up to six persons or group campsites that can hold up to 25 campers. This campground is open year round. There are back-in and pull-through RV sites both with electrical hookups. There are also tent sites and a group hike-in site. Potable water spigots are located throughout the campgrounds. A dump station is located near the park entrance. Restrooms have sinks for washing dishes and hot showers operated with the use of tokens. The campground also has a recycling station, public phones, walking trail and firewood concession area. Approximately two-thirds of this campground is reservable spots, while the other one-third is on a first-come first-serve basis. Pets are welcome in the campground, but must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet.

    D.H. Day Campground

    • D.H. Day Campground is located near the dune climb and the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. The campground has 88 primitive sites within easy walking distance of Lake Michigan. The park has water spigots and vault toilets throughout the facility. There is no electricity or showers at D.H. Day Campground. During the summer, a program is presented by a park ranger each evening. This program may include local folklore or slideshows of local nature. Camping is permitted in this park from April through November each year. All campsites are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Only a few sites are approved for generator use. These sites may only use generators from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Quiet hours will be observed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily. Campers may not collect firewood inside the grounds; therefore a firewood concession is available for all guests.

    White Pine Backcountry Camp

    • White Pine Backcountry Campground has only six campsites. This facility is located just off of M-22 near the town of Empire. Sites are wooded and private. They will accommodate only tent or small pop-up campers. No water or electricity is available here. Guests may haul water from Lake Michigan or bring their own bottles of water. If taking water from the lake, it must be treated before drinking. The campground has one restroom facility with pit toilet near the entrance to the campground. There is also one fire ring that is centrally located. Visitors who would like to stay at White Pine Backcountry Camp must have a permit to do so. During the summer, this permit can be obtained at the ranger station at Platte River Campground. Other times, the permit may be obtained at the Philip A. Hart Visitor's Center.
