At the bottom of Egyptian society were the slaves. Slaves were people who had been captured in war, purchased from slave traders, or born into slavery. They were forced to work long hours for little or no pay, and they had no rights.
Between the slaves and the nobles were the common people. The common people were made up of farmers, artisans, merchants, and priests. They lived in small villages and towns, and they worked hard to support themselves and their families.
