Statue of Liberty Is on Liberty Island, Not Ellis Island

Common misconception: The Statue of Liberty never stood on Ellis Island.

  • Liberty Island (formerly Bedloe's Island) – home to Liberty Enlightening the World since 1886.
  • Ellis Island – 0.5 miles north; immigration station 1892–1954.

Both are in Upper New York Bay, administered by the National Park Service as the Statue of Liberty National Monument. Ferries visit both; they are distinct islands with distinct histories.
