F.D. Roosevelt State Park, 38 miles southeast of West Point Lake in Warm Springs, is Georgia's largest state park. With 40 miles of trails covering more than 9,000 acres, the park lures hikers and backpackers. The 23-mile PIne Mountain Trail winds through rolling mountains covered in hardwood and pine forest punctuated by creeks and waterfalls. Other activities at the park include swimming, fishing, horseback riding, canoeing and kayaking. Amenities include a playground, picnic areas and boat rentals. The park campground has sites for tents, trailers and RVs as well as backcountry primitive sites.
Chattahoochee Bend State Park, 44 miles northeast of West Point Lake in Coweta County, appeals to paddlers, hikers and campers. Covering nearly 3,000 acres, the park protects 5 miles of river frontage that allows access for canoeing and kayaking. Hikers will enjoy 6 miles of wooded trails and an observation platform with views of the river. Campers have many choices in the park, from developed sites that accommodate tents, trailers and RVs to backcountry and paddle-in sites. Park amenities include a boat ramp, picnic areas and a playground.
Florence Marina State Park, 83 miles south of West Point Lake near Omaha, Georgia, is a good park for watersports and nature enthusiasts. The park sits at the northern end of Lake Walter F. George, adjacent to a deep-water marina, boat ramp and fishing pier. Florence Marina attracts bird watchers beause of the herons, egrets and bald eagles often present. The Kirbo Interpretive Center has exhibits on the park's plants and wildlife. For overnight stays, the park offers cottages and a campground with sites for tents, trailers and RVs.
Sweetwater Creek State Park, 85 miles northeast of West Point Lake in Lithia Springs, is a wilderness area just minutes from downtown Atlanta. Nine miles of hiking trails pass through forests of hardwoods, magnolias and wild azaleas. Trails lead to the ruins of a 19th-century textile mill and to bluffs with panoramic views of the rapids on Sweetwater Creek. The park's George Sparks Reservoir provides opportunities for fishing, boating, canoeing and kayaking. Other activities include bird watching and picnicking. A visitor center has displays on the area's history and wildlife.
