Camping Places Near Las Cruces, New Mexico

Las Cruces, New Mexico, 225 miles south of Albuquerque, was founded in 1848, the year the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo converted the area from Mexican to U.S. territory. Today, the city is known for its desert scenery, authentic Mexican food and 350 days of sunshine a year. Area campgrounds give visitors access to a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, cycling and wildlife viewing.
  1. West of Downtown

    • Two campgrounds west of downtown Las Cruces provide convenient access to museums, theaters and restaurants. Sunny Acres RV Park, 2 miles west of the city center, has extra-wide RV sites with full hookups and cable television. Amenities include restrooms with showers, laundry facilities and wireless Internet. Las Cruces KOA, 6 miles southwest of downtown, has panoramic views of the jagged Organ Mountains behind the city. The park has tent sites, RV sites and cabins. Tent sites are shaded and grassy, with water and electric outlets, or just water. The sites also have fire rings and grills, with liquid propane campfires at select sites. RV sites have full hookups, wireless Internet and cable television.

    South of Downtown

    • Several campgrounds south of downtown provide convenient access to Las Cruces Railroad Museum, Memorial Stadium, the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum, and historic Old Mesilla, the former haunt of Billy the Kid. Hacienda RV Park, 4 miles south of downtown, has sites with full hookups, cable television and wireless Internet. Amenities include a clubhouse, hot tub and exercise room.
      Siesta RV Park, 4 miles southwest of downtown, provides convenient access to nearby ghost towns. Sites have full hookups, cable television and wireless Internet. Tent sites are available. All sites have access to restrooms, showers and laundry facilities.

    State Parks

    • Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park, 7 miles southwest of downtown Las Cruces on the Rio Grande, has nature trails with opportunities for viewing wildlife in natural surroundings. Campsites have full hookups, picnic tables, grills, and restrooms with flush toilets and showers. For tent campers, the park has a primitive area with no amenities except vault toilets. Leasburg Dam State Park, 18 miles northwest of Las Cruces, is on the Rio Grande, with hiking trails that lead from the river to desert uplands. The park's campground has sites for tents, trailers and RVs, with water and electrical hookups. A dump station, restrooms, showers and vault toilets are centrally located. Leasburg also offers a primitive area exclusively for tent campers. The area is equipped with vault toilets, and is within walking distance of a beach, picnic area and three trails.

    White Sands National Monument

    • White Sands National Monument, 60 miles northeast of Las Cruces near Alamogordo, protects the world's largest gypsum dune field, and the plants and animals that live there. The brilliant white dunes cover 275 square miles of the Tularosa Basin. White Sands has 10 primitive campsites reached by a 1-mile trail. The sites have no water or toilet facilities, and ground fires are not allowed. The sites are first-come, first-served, with no reservations taken, although campers must obtain a permit at the visitors center. Water containers may be filled at the visitors center.
