Escaping the hustle and bustle of Atlanta isn't hard. There are state parks within less than an hour's drive, allowing visitors to refresh and recharge in the midst of nature. Hike, bike, swim and fish, or just get away from it all. City residents can learn more about the outdoors from the many programs offered through the state park system.
Just 18 miles southeast of Atlanta, this ecologically sensitive, 1,319-acre park protects the Panola Mountain. The 100-acre granite mountain is home to rare plants in Georgia's Piedmont. While access is restricted, guided tours of the mountain are available. No dogs are permitted on most of the park's trails, and bicycles are limited to paved areas. Facilities include a visitor center, two lakes, playground and picnic shelters. Various nature programs are held throughout the year, including special camping clinics.
