Bernie Sanders: Leading U.S. Democratic Socialist

Bernie Sanders (Independent, caucuses with Democrats) is the most prominent self-described democratic socialist in contemporary U.S. politics.

  • Senator from Vermont since 2007 (formerly U.S. Rep. 1991–2007; Mayor of Burlington 1981–1989).
  • Presidential campaigns: 2016 and 2020 Democratic primaries—won 23 states, 12M+ votes, shifted party platform left.
  • Signature policies: Medicare for All, Green New Deal, $15 minimum wage, tuition-free public college, wealth tax, labor law reform.
  • Ideology: "Democratic socialism" = political democracy + social ownership of key sectors + robust welfare state (Nordic model), not Soviet-style communism.

Other notable left figures: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (DSA member), Rashida Tlaib, Cori Bush, but Sanders remains the national standard-bearer.
