When do you need a cdl in New York state?

If you are driving any of the following vehicles, both in intrastate and interstate commerce, you are required to have a CDL:

-Any combination of vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.

-Any vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver.

-Any vehicle used in the transportation of hazardous materials in quantities requiring placarding.

-Any vehicle (except a firetruck) that is used in firefighting operations

-Any vehicle pulling a hazardous materials load requires a CDL with hazmat endorsement, regardless of the GVWR. If you are pulling a vehicle with a GVWR of 10,000 lbs. or less, hazmat endorsement only is needed.

-A farm vehicle with a gross weight rating over 18,000 lbs. used to transport agricultural products from the farm is exempt when staying within 150 air miles of the farm’s headquarters.

Other Considerations:

-You must also have a CDL if you are operating a commercial vehicle within the state of New York, even if you are not crossing state lines.

-There are exemptions for certain types of vehicles, such as recreational vehicles and farm vehicles.

-If you are unsure whether or not you need a CDL, you can contact the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

CDL Requirements:

-To obtain a CDL, you must pass the following tests:

-A vision test

-A written knowledge test

-A driving skills test

-You must also provide the DMV with proof of your identity, residency, and citizenship or lawful permanent resident status.

-The CDL you are issued will depend on the type of vehicle you will be operating.

-You will have to renew your CDL every five years.

Penalties for Driving Without a CDL:

-If you are caught driving a commercial vehicle without a CDL, you could face a fine, jail time, and the suspension of your driver's license.
