Quiznos in the US: From 4,500 Locations to ~100 Today

Quiznos, the toasted-sub sandwich chain founded in Denver, Colorado (1981), once rivaled Subway in ubiquity. Its footprint has collapsed dramatically.

Peak vs. Now

  • 2007 peak: ~4,700 locations worldwide (~4,500 in US).
  • 2023: ~100 locations total, primarily in the US and Canada.

Why the Decline?

  • Franchisee lawsuits over food costs, marketing fees, and supply-chain mandates.
  • High operating costs (toasted subs require specialized ovens, more energy, pricier ingredients).
  • Aggressive overexpansion saturated markets.
  • Subway's dominance on price and real estate.
  • 2014 bankruptcy (Chapter 11); acquired by High Bluff Capital Partners.
  • Pandemic accelerated closures of remaining marginal units.

Current Status

The brand survives but is a shadow of its former self. Remaining locations are concentrated in the Midwest, Mountain West, and parts of the South. No longer "all over the United States."
