No Megalopolis Stretches from New Hampshire—The Northeast Megalopolis Is Boston–DC
The term "megalopolis" (popularized by Jean Gottmann, 1961) refers to the Northeast Megalopolis / BosWash corridor—the continuous urbanized zone from Boston, MA to Washington, DC (approx. 500 mi / 800 km).
It Does Not Start in New Hampshire
- Boston is the northern anchor.
- New Hampshire's southern tier (Nashua, Salem, Seacoast) is exurban/commuter fringe of Greater Boston—not the megalopolis core.
- No continuous urban fabric extends from NH to DC.
What NH Has Instead
- Manchester–Nashua metro (~420K) — distinct, not merged with Boston MSA.
- Seacoast (Portsmouth, Hampton) — historic ports, tourism.
- Lakes Region, White Mountains — rural/recreational.
Other world megalopolises: Tokyo–Nagoya–Osaka (Japan), Pearl River Delta (China), Rhine-Ruhr (Germany/Netherlands), São Paulo–Rio (Brazil).
