What is an explanation of how New Hampshire got its name?

New Hampshire's name is believed to originate from two English counties by the same name located in southern and south-eastern England.

In 1629, Captain John Mason and Sir Fernando Gorges were granted a charter by England's King Charles I for the land between the Merrimack and the Piscataqua River which was named the "Province of New Hampshire," after Hampshire England from which Captain John Mason had originated.
