Philadelphia Summer Programs

Philadelphia summer programs provide a broad range of academic and activity programs for children between 3 and 17 years of age. Programs are available to encourage young girls' exploration of science. Some programs investigate the connections between humans and the natural world while others work to improve participants' techniques in physical activities.

  1. Curious Jane

    • Curious Jane day camps are hosted at Bryn Mawr College and Springside School for young girls between the ages of 6 and 12. There are eight different programs for children to choose from, including toy design, story arts and illustration, animal nature, lab science, pondology and rocket science. In the toy design program, children learn to build small games, develop characters and costumes, and design packaging just like professional companies. The story arts and illustration program teaches children what is involved in developing a story, such as character and plot line, and sketch-corresponding illustrations. The lab science program is for girls who love to explore and are encouraged to participate in a number of science experiments and keep track of their favorite ones. Pondology teaches children about water ecosystems, how they are sustained and what affects their sustainability.

These day programs last for two or three weeks, and programs are available on a half- and full-day basis. The Zooper Troopers program for 4- and 5-year-olds lasts for two weeks, and children learn to classify animals according to their differences and similarities. The Zoo Explorers for 6- and 7-year-olds introduces children to animal habitats and survival tactics of different animals. Young zoologists ages 12 and 13 are introduced to the science and technology used by animal scientists during a three-week program.

    Sixers Camps

    • The Philadelphia 76ers Basketball and Dance camps are for children between the ages of 5 and 17. The basketball day camp, held at the Community College of Philadelphia, hosts boys and girls between 7 and 13 years old in five day-long sessions. The camp focuses on improving skills in ball handling, passing, offense, shooting, rebounding and defense. One day is spent in a hands-on clinic with present members of the 76ers team. The five-day dance program is held at the Wachovia Center, where boys and girls participate in choreography and performance workshops. At the end of the week, participants present what they have learned in a production for parents. Children who have participated in this program are eligible to audition for the Sixers Junior Dancers.
