Yucca Deer Grass Trails

The Yucca Deer Grass Trail is actually two trails. The Yucca and Deer trails are two trails that have the same trailhead within Red Rock Canyon Park in the Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Park region. Both trailheads start from Stunt Road on the northeast side of the Red Rock Canyon Park and the Mount Calabasas area. Santa Monica Mountain Recreational Park and Red Rock Canyon Park have a trails system that inter-links. Some of the trails are fire roads while others are small foot trails.
  1. Red Rock Canyon Park

    • While hiking the trails in the park, you will see laurel sumac, bush flowers, and mountain mahogany. There are also sculptured rock formations and small animals such as chipmunks, gophers and rabbits. Around the Mount Calabasas area, there are larger mammals such as mule deer, coyotes and bobcats. Lizards and snakes including rattlers and the California King snakes are found resting in the cool rock crevices within the park.The many bird species within the park include hawks, eagles, falcons and owls. The California flyway passes through the park; therefore, on occasion there are other migratory birds such as Canada geese.

    Deer Grass Trail

    • Dear Grass Trail is an unofficial trail with a trailhead that runs north to west from Stunt Road. This trail is about .30 miles in length and is hilly. The trail dead-ends on Meadow Trail. Heading south, Meadow Trail dead-ends onto Cold Creek Trail. Cold Creek trail travels southwest and has a trailhead on McKain Street.

    Yucca Trail

    • Yucca Trail is an unofficial trail with a trailhead on Stunt Rd and travels to the southwest. The trail dead-ends on Cold Creek Trail. Yucca Trail is approximate .23 miles in length and is hilly. Traveling west on Cold Creek Trail, you will find the Meadow Trail mergers onto Cold Creek before coming to the trail head on McKain Street.

    The Trail Loop

    • The trail loop made up of the four trails is approximately 2 miles, making it great for day treks. All four trails are medium to easy hiking; however, the trails are not well marked. Trails are mostly foot trails and fire roads that round large rock formations teaming with wildlife. There are picnic areas and drinking fountains at several trailheads within the park.
