Things Do in the South Side of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The South Side of Pittsburgh is on the southern banks of the Monongahela River and home to some of the Three Rivers City's oldest buildings. Many of South Side's residences and public buildings date back to the 19th and early 20th centuries. South Side also provides a vibrant nightlife and hipster shopping on East Carson Street. Children and adults also have opportunities for athletics and recreation via South Side's sports organizations and parks.
  1. Boutique Shopping

    • The South Side of Pittsburgh features locally-owned boutique and mom-and-pop retail stores in the Southside Flats neighborhood. The primary thoroughfare in Southside Flats is East Carson Street. Some of Southside Flats' stores include Slacker (slackernet.com), which sells clothing apparel and accessories that appeal to young adults, and Dave's Music Mine (davesmusicmine.com), an independent music store endemic to Pittsburgh.

    Nightclubs

    • Southside Flats also has a string of night spots on East Carson such as vibrant nightclubs -- Elixir Ultra Lounge (elixirpgh.com) and Diesel Nightclub (dieselpgh.com‎) -- and hometown bars -- Town Tavern (towntavernpittsburgh.com‎) and Excuses Bar (no website; 2526 East Carson St.; Pittsburgh, PA 15203; 412-431-4090). All of South Side's nightclubs require patrons to be at least 21 years old. On the weekend, the bar scene on East Carson ends at around 2 a.m., as of May 2011.

    Historic Tours

    • East Carson Street runs through the Southside Flats area of Pittsburgh. This street is also on the National Register of Historic Places, listed as the East Carson Street Historic District. East Carson Street Historic District features Victorian-era and early 20th century residences and public office buildings. Visitors may take self-guided tours to view East Carson's historic structures. The Bedford School is on the corner of East Carson and 10th Street and was built in 1850, making it one of South Side's oldest buildings. Two churches in the East Carson District, St. John the Baptists Ukrainian Catholic Church and St. Adalbert Church, were completed in 1895 and 1898, respectively.

    Youth Sports

    • The South Side of Pittsburgh offers the Southside Sabers youth football organization for boys ages 7 through 13. The organization offers five teams: the Twerps for ages 7 and 8, Termites for 9-year olds, Mini Mites for 10-year olds, Mighty Mites for 11-year olds and Midgets for boys ages 12 and 13. The Southside Sabers' football teams play in the South Suburban Youth Football League; games occur in the fall. For girls ages 7 through 13, Southside Sabers offers cheerleading opportunities for the teams. Each of Southside Sabers' five teams has a cheerleading squad.

    Recreation

    • Located on the Monongahela River, the Southside Riverfront Park is the largest public recreation area in Pittsburgh's South Side area. This park is on the southern banks of the river, providing scenic views of the downtown Pittsburgh skyline. Southside Riverfront Park is home to a segment of the Three Rivers Trail System, a 4.5-mile paved trail for bicycling and jogging activities. The park also has docks on the Monongahela River for fishing and boating. Picnic areas are available to visitors within the park.
