Death Valley, located in the southern portion of the state between Fresno and Los Angeles but farther inland, is the warmest region in the state. It is no wonder that San Diego has some of the most costly real estate in California. Visitors flock to this city to enjoy its sunny environs and sandy beaches, as well as plenty of retirees moving to the city and its surrounding areas to enjoy the year-round mild weather. San Diego is the closest California region to the equator -- yet right off the coast -- has a perfect average winter temperature that hovers just below 70 degrees.
Known as the greatest garden in the world, California's Central Valley is a cornucopia of agriculture. Uniquely situated between the mountainous coastal ranges and the even more forbidding Sierra mountain range, this green plateau enjoys mild yearly weather with average winter temperatures in the high 50 degree range. With the perfect growing weather, this 400-mile-long Central Valley supplies fully one-quarter of the food America eats.
Orange County, and its very near neighbor Los Angeles County, lies a few hours north by car from San Diego. Sharing close to the same longitude as Death Valley, this region is a little milder throughout the winter months, with a mean average temperature of 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Occasional rainfall brought in from the coastal surrounding areas, as well as morning fog, serve to keep this region in the perfect temperature range year-round.
