The Rocky Mountains have a significant effect on the climate and terrain of Colorado, Wyoming and Idaho. Without the Rockies, these states would be flat and dry. But because of them, they have majestic mountains with lofty peaks that juxtapose with scenic basins and canyons, as well as extensive prairies and plateaus.
The Rocky Mountains provide water for the otherwise dry states of Colorado, Wyoming and Idaho. The Rockies force air to rise to cooler altitudes. Since cool air cannot hold as much moisture as warm air, it rains or snows in the Rockies, not only watering the mountains but also sending water to the lowlands in the form of rivers and streams.
The Rocky Mountains in Colorado, Wyoming and Idaho play host to species of plants and animals that would not be present if the entire area were flat. The mountain rains enable forest communities to develop, such as the beautiful white pine forests of Idaho. The diverse fauna includes such attractions as bighorn sheep and mountain goats.
The Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Wyoming and Idaho contain such underground treasures as gold, silver, copper and the more exotic star garnets of Idaho. The Rockies also draw tourist money into these three states. Tourists like to hunt, hike and fish in summer and ski on the mountain slopes in winter.
