Since it opened in 2009, Honeypie Cafe (honeypiecafe.com) has racked up awards including "Best Breakfast Restaurant" from Milwaukee Magazine and a "Best New Restaurant" award from OnMilwaukee.com, the city's daily online magazine. The casual cafe has built a reputation for serving true Midwestern food made from scratch with meats, vegetables and dairy products from local farms. Cooks bake all of the breads, muffins, cakes and pies daily and the extensive dessert menu includes traditional choices such as apple and blueberry pie and more exotic sweets such as pistachio rosewater cake and chai cupcakes. Honeypie's entrees are hearty Wisconsin with a wide streak of gourmet. The macaroni and cheese is made with cheddar and Gruyere and the meatloaf dinner is topped with a branded cream sauce. Although there is no children's menu, Honeypie's will make a child-sized version of anything on the menu.
Many longtime Bay View residents grew up eating pizza and sandwiches from Mama DiMarini's (no website; 1211 E Conway St Bay View; 414- 481-2348 ) which opened in 1949. The restaurant serves thin-crust pies with traditional Italian toppings such as pepperoni, black olives and anchovies. DiMarini's has never bothered with pineapple or buffalo chicken pizza, and has instead stuck with its tried-and-true lineup of hearty and affordable Italian-American fare. The menu also offers basic pasta dishes such as ravioli, lasagna and spaghetti served with meat or tomato sauce.
The Soup Market (soupmarket.com) has established itself as a Bay View family spot by putting kids in charge of the restaurant's signature beverage. The two daughters of the Soup Market's owner have invented Haley and Anna's vanilla root beer to compliment the menu of soups, stews, chili, sandwiches and salads. The soup menu changes daily, but always includes something on the ends of both the kid and adult spectrums of taste. Chicken noodle and tomato bisque are served along side of soups such as seafood paella and cream of asparagus with lemon and dill. Sandwiches follow suit and include a variety of choices such as grilled cheese, tuna melts, fresh mozzarella and tomato with artichoke spread and chicken walnut served on a cranberry ciabatta roll.
The owners of the Omega Restaurant (omegaon27.com) advertise their business as Bay View's premier family restaurant. The affordable, diner-style restaurant that never closes was named runner up in the best Greek Restaurant category in 2007 in ExpressMilwaukee.com readers poll. According to the OnMilwaukee.com restaurant guide, the Omega has an extensive menu of Greek and American dishes such as burgers, steaks, gryos and spanakopita. The guide also gives a thumbs up to the Omega's galaktoboureka, a traditional Greek custard. The on-site bakery also makes other Greek desserts such as baklava and kataifi.
