The Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary (folsom.ca.us) is an educational place to take kids to teach them about the importance of treating animals with respect. This is not considered a typical zoo, but a sanctuary, as it provides a home to animals who were previously unwanted, raised as pets, injured or orphaned in the wild. Most animals within the sanctuary are from North America. The sanctuary is not accredited with the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, as the animals are not bred, sold or traded.
Located in Folsom City Park near the public library and city zoo, the Folsom Valley Railway (folsomvalleyrailway.com) provides scenic train rides, refreshment stands and a picnic area for the family to enjoy an outdoor lunch. The railway has been in operation since 1970 and is the only 12-inch gauge railroad functioning in the United States at the time of publication. Operating on authentic steam engines, the trains run on a 3/4 mile track and the ride lasts about 10 minutes.
Located on Folsom-Auburn Road, the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area (parks.ca.gov) allows visitors to enjoy boating, biking, horseback riding and other outdoor activities. You can teach the kids how to fish or take them water-skiing. Visitors are advised to make camping reservations in advance, as lots can fill up quickly. The Folsom Powerhouse, also located on the recreation area, was an electrical plant that produced 11,000 volts of electricity to Sacramento residents from 1885 to 1952.
