In April 2011, students from Red Bluff's Mercy High School are staging an amateur performance of "Le Miserable," based on the classic novel by Victor Hugo. The event will take place in the school's gymnasium on April 7, 2011, with two more shows on April 9, which is preceded by a Gala event, and April 10, which is a matinee performance. For those looking to eat before or after the show as part of the evening's activities, the high school is also located within 0.4 miles of several local eating establishments, including the Cozy Diner Restaurant (no website; 259 S. Main St., Red Bluff; 530-528-8777) and the Tremont Cafe and Creamery (no website; 731 Main St., Red Bluff; 530-529-4012).
A child-friendly event, Kid's Cowboy Poetry is a poetry contest hosted at the Tehama County Library (tehamacountylibrary.org) in Red Bluff. A sponsored event, it's organized by the Tehama County CattleWomen, a club dedicated to the promotion of the regional cattle industry. The 2011 event will mark the 20th staging of the poetry event, which focuses on poems dedicated to the cowboy lifestyle and cattle ranching. In addition, the Tehama County CattleWomen will also be sponsoring "An Evening with Baxter Black, Cowboy Poet" in April as well, featuring poetry from the renowned writer reciting his work at the nearby State Theatre. The library is also home to several more events revolving around reading in the month of April. On April 19, the library hosts its Book Club, and the selected book will have numerous copies in stock at the library.
Beginning Saturday, April 23, Red Bluff is home to an event called Civil War Days, staged for the seventh annual time in 2011. Hosted at the Samuel Ayer/Dog Island, right on Red Bluff's Main Street, the event offers Civil War reenactments, including two staged battles and the chance to walk through a living, recreated camp for Civil War-era soldiers. The event is not pet-friendly, and a satellite parking lot will be set up nearby with available shuttle service. An affordable event, general admission as of the time of publication is only $5, while kids under age 12 are allowed entrance for $1.
On Tuesday, April 12, Red Bluff is host to the Big Picture Rodeo Photography and Art Show Reception, held at The Big Picture gallery and photography store (no website; 857 Washington St.,
Red Bluff; 530-527-3369). Sponsored by the Tehama County Arts Council, the nighttime event details the 90-year history of the local Red Bluff Round-Up, Red Bluffs cultural rodeo and exhibition. Other featured events sponsored by the arts council of Tehama County for the month of April include the Red Bluff Union High School Art Show, held at the Montan Morrison Art Gallery in Red Bluff throughout the entire month.
