Travel Destinations Near East Berlin, Pennsylvania

East Berlin is located in south central Pennsylvania in an area known for its natural rural beauty and colonial history. Within about 45 minutes of East Berlin are some fascinating travel destinations that attract visitors to this part of the Mid-Atlantic. Follow historic trails or tour a potato chip factory. There are opportunities to hike, golf or ski in the area, as well.
  1. Gettysburg

    • In 2007, 2.9 million people visited Gettysburg National Military Park to see the site of the Battle of Gettysburg, which was a turning point in the American Civil War. The 1863 battle ended with a Union victory and is often referred to as the "High Water Mark of the Rebellion." The battle was so fierce and bloody Robert E. Lee was stopped from advancing and the tide of the war turned in favor of the North, but at the huge cost of the lives of 51,000 soldiers. Gettysburg is also the site of President Abraham Lincoln's famous "Gettysburg Address."

    Liberty Mountain Resort

    • Liberty Mountain Resort and Conference Center is a ski and sport center in Carrollton, about 40 minutes southwest of East Berlin. Liberty Mountain has 16 trails of skiing with the longest run at 5,200 feet. The ski season runs from December through mid-March. The resort is located on 450 acres near the Catoctin Mountains and has more than 100 acres of skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing trails. Liberty Mountain is not just for winter sports, however. The resort also has the 18-hole championship Carroll Valley golf course available for guests, along with a 30,000 square foot meeting space which is available all year. The resort has three tiers of decks for outdoor gatherings and is a venue for weddings and corporate retreats. Liberty Mountain is home to the Boulder Ridge Challenge Course, and the Liberty Mountain Hotel has 98 guest rooms and a luxury suite.

    Factory Tours

    • See how Utz potato chips and Turkey Hill ice cream are made, or tour a working dairy farm in the York, Pennsylvania, area, which is only 22 minutes and 14 miles east of East Berlin. The York County Convention and Visitors Bureau lists 21 factory tours on its website. Visitors see how soap is made at the Sunrise Soap Company, see glass being made at Susquehanna Glass, visit an alpaca farm at the Painted Spring Farm Alpacas or take a drive out to Hershey, Pennsylvania, to see where the famous chocolate got its start.

    Michaux State Forest

    • The Appalachian Trail runs through the Michaux State Forest, which is accessed in Fayetteville, located about 35 miles from East Berlin. The Appalachian Trail is a continuous footpath that extends from central Maine to Georgia, through 14 states. The trail extends diagonally across the eastern portion of the Pennsylvania for almost 229 miles. About 39 of those miles are in the Michaux State Forest, which is located just north of the Maryland state line. Hike the Appalachian trail here, or else camp, fish, cycle, cross-country ski, ice skate or snowmobile along forest trails.
