A relatively small, nondescript town off of Interstate 80 in northeastern Utah, Coalville's location at the crux of the Uinta and Wasatch mountain ranges makes it a destination for relaxing and adventurous outdoor retreats. You'll find Echo Reservoir and the Weber River within a few miles of town, and Park City and other mountain resort towns within a short drive.
Coalville vacations are best characterized by the outdoor recreation of the town and surrounding area. Coalville is located in the mountains at an elevation of 5,500 feet. Coalville is near the junction of northern Utah's two most prominent mountain ranges: the Wasatch and Uinta. The Uinta Range houses Utah's highest peaks and some of its most isolated alpine wilderness, while the Wasatch range is home to the state's most accessible trails.
Echo Reservoir is located in Coalville and is a destination for fishing, boating and water skiing. The Historic Union Pacific Rail Trail State Park is a park based around the 28-mile trail that connects Echo Reservoir with Park City.
Though Coalville isn't a resort town itself, the world-famous ski destination of Park City is just 30 minutes down the interstate. Hotel prices in Park City can get quite high during the winter months, so commuting from Coalville presents a cost-efficient alternative. For cross-country skiing, the town of Midway, where you'll find resorts like Soldier Hollow and The Homestead, is 40 minutes away. The high Uintas offer snowmobiling, back-country ski yurts, snowshoeing and other winter adventures.
A town of about 1,500, Coalville offers limited accommodations. Echo Dam Resort is located at the top of the Echo Reservoir. The outdoor-centric resort gives guests access to mountain biking, boating, hiking and other outdoor activities. It has campsites and an on-site restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are several motel properties located on Main Street, and the Best Western Holiday Hills is located just off I-80, making it a good choice when traveling to Park City, Salt Lake City or other east/west destinations.
Coalville hosts a number of events throughout the year. The Annual Heritage Festival and Pig Roast features live music, wagon rides, kids activities and free food. The Supercruise Car Show fills Main Street with classic cruiser cars, oldies music and fireworks. In August, Coalville is the site of the Summit County Fair, which includes animal exhibits, rodeos, art exhibits and fireworks.
