Big Bend is the area of the Chihuahuan Desert in West Texas, near the bend in the Rio Grande that forms the border between the United States and Mexico. Over a million acres of public land is in Big Bend and it is a popular tourist destination for campers, wildlife enthusiasts, hikers and river rafters. Big Bend offers a wide variety of vacation activities.
Authorized by Congress as a National Park since 1935, Big Bend National Park contains mountain, river and desert environments. This diversity makes the area suitable for several types of outdoor activities such as hiking, backpacking, fishing, guided river or bac kroad tours or viewing birds and other wildlife. Guests can choose to stay in the park at one of the nearly 200 camp sites, the RV park or at the Chisos Mountain Lodge, which also has a dining room. There are many resorts and hotels located a short distance from the park, as are several restaurants.
