Located between Detroit and Flint, in the heart of Oakland County; Clarkston, Michigan has all the allure of a national historical site surrounded by stunning nature parks and scenic landscapes. Every Saturday morning from mid-June to early October, the Clarkston Farmers' Market invites patrons to enjoy a cup of organic fair trade coffee accompanied by the musical serenade of local musicians. Located across from Depot Park in downtown Clarkston, the market features locally grown fruits and vegetables as well as specialty items such as organic grass-fed beef, locally-made corn clips, maple syrup, honey, organic peanut butters and jams and a variety of baked goods.
This 1,285-acre park hosts nearly 10 miles of marked nature trails as well as biking and rollerblading pathways. Families can enjoy picnicking, fishing, hiking, camping, swimming and nature study. Non-motorized boats, canoes, kayaks and paddle boat rentals are available on Crooked Lake. Ball fields, sand volleyball courts, playgrounds and horseshoe pits ensure a fun time for kids of all ages. After playing, take in the picturesque view of Crooked Lake from the park's famous gazebo.
The park is also home to the Lewis E. Wint Nature Center which offers year-round exhibits and education programs led by park naturalists. The Rubach Sensory Garden, located in the nature center, also features a stunning gazebo and water garden.
Deer Lake offers a wide variety of activities for the whole family. Water sports including kayaking, tubing, water-skiing and wake-boarding are available. With a rich variety of fish and many secluded enclaves, Deer Lake is a popular fishing and boating destination. The lake also offers a safe swimming beach with lifeguards.
A popular local hangout, Depot Park offers free concerts every Friday night during the summer months. Located in downtown Clarkston, local talent shares the stage with visiting acts performing everything from big band to rock classics and tribute bands. The concert series has been a feature of Clarkston summers for over 30 years. The park also offers walking pathways and a playground for children.
The state of Michigan has more golf courses per capita than any other in the United States and many of them are located near Clarkston. One of the most famous courses is Shepherd's Hollow. Set on over 250 rolling acres at one of the highest elevations in Oakland County, Shepherd's Hollow is surrounded by woodlands and a natural, peaceful ambiance. Ranked the 42nd best public golf course in the country by Golf Digest, this champion course offers 27 holes along with a full service driving range and practice center.
