Things to Do in Jackson Hole, WY Over the Summer

Sitting at the base of the Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, a mountain town of nearly 8,500, blossoms into an outdoor mecca during the summer months. Alpine lakes, torrent rivers and rolling foothills combine with Jackson Hole's cosmopolitan ruggedness of fine restaurants and kitschy cowboy bars. The area abounds with an endless number of things to do over the summer.

  1. Rafting the Snake River

    • From scenic float trips to adrenaline-inducing class III and IV rapids, the Snake River provides a roller-coaster waterway through the heart of Jackson Hole valley. A number of outfitters provide half, full and overnight trips, including transportation, equipment, experienced guide and food. The float trips are suitable for families with children of all ages. Age limits and experience levels are taken into consideration for whitewater rafting trips. July and August provide the highest water levels for the Snake, while early and late summer the levels drop off considerably and rapids can be underwhelming.

    Horseback Riding

    • With miles and miles of horse trails switch-backing through the foothills of the Grand Tetons, Jackson Hole provides an incredible proving ground for horseback trips. More than two dozen outfitters provide day rides and multi-night pack trips. Horseback rides range from an hour to a full day outing. Pack trips are usually all-inclusive and provide transportation, guide, meals and equipment.

    Jackson Hole Rodeo

    • The cowboy spirit began when the first settlers arrived over the Teton Pass in 1890 and lives on at the Jackson Hole Rodeo. Bull riding, clowns and cowboy hats are all part of the summertime rodeo, which begins in late May and runs till September. Dates are posted on the website. All performances kick off at 8 p.m., with ticket prices ranging from $8.50 to$19. All times and prices are valid through 2010.

    Golf

    • The Jackson Hole valley provides the rolling terrain for five local golf courses: 3 Creek Ranch, Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis Club, Shooting Star, Jackson Hole Country Club and Targhee Village. Courses were designed to suit the valley's environment and provide challenging holes. All courses have a pro shop and dining facilities. Advance reservations are recommended during the summer's peak months of June, July and August.

    Other Outdoor Recreation

    • With a vast and varying landscape, the Jackson Hole area provides some of the best outdoor recreation in the West. Mountain biking is an intimate and thrilling option to see the Grand Teton National Park. The area's waterways, including Jenny Lake, offer canoeing, kayaking and fishing. Day trips to Yellowstone National Park are possible as the park's southern entrance is 100 miles from Jackson Hole.
