Baltimore is the largest independent city in the United States and is situated in the northern part of the Maryland state on the Patapsco River estuary. The city's economy is strong in financial, legal and not-for-profit industry and there is also a significant tourism infrastructure. For tourists, and for the locals, a thriving nightlife scene is made up of club lounges, chilled-out nightclubs and bars.
Districts in the north of Baltimore include Hampden, Guilford and Pen Lucy, and several lounge bars are in these areas of the city. Some good examples include the Chocolatea Café & Tea Lounge, the New Haven Lounge and the Wozi Lounge. One of Hampden's more popular lounges is the relaxing and chilled-out 13.5% Wine Bar, which serves specialist wine, cocktails, beers and food. The interior of the lounge is modern with low lighting and red brick walls. The establishment also boasts over 200 bottles of wine and prides itself on locally-sourced food.
Baltimore's city center also offers a wide range of club lounges and bars. These include the Club One, LuX Upscale Nightclub, Xanadu and Larry Flint's Hustler Club. One of the more popular club lounges in this area of the city is Bourbon Street, which is a relaxed pre-bar and club that targets the younger members of the city. The lighting is low and the atmosphere is calm and comfortable. Later in the night, the lounge turns into a dance club, ditching the calming lounge atmosphere for something a little more up-tempo.
Hollins Park, Heritage Crossing and Midtown Edmonson are three of the Baltimore districts west and south of the city. In and around these areas you can take your pick of several lounges including Good Times Liquor & Bar Lounge, Virgo Lounge and David's Place. One of the bar lounges in the Washington Village district of Baltimore is Bobby's Jazz Club; this particular bar and lounge has a small and cozy interior and sells wine and specialty cigars. The lounge also puts on special deals and events on certain nights of the week, like happy hour, karaoke, free wine and live jazz.
Specializing as a burlesque entertainment lounge, Sherrie's Showbar is located on the far east of the city in the Elwood Park area. The lounge provides entertainment through male and female dancing as well as live standup comedy. After a disastrous electrical fire that burned down the establishment in 2007, the burlesque lounge is once again open for business. Other areas in the east of the city include Madison-Eastend, Brewers Hill and Highlandtown. Lounges and relaxed bars in this area include Laughing Pint, Shorty's and Charm City Swing.
