San Gabriel, California is located about 10 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. San Gabriel was one of the first areas to be settled in the Los Angeles region more than 200 years ago, making it a historical place to visit. Although the city is steeped in history, there are still many modern and unique things for visitors to do in San Gabriel.

  1. San Gabriel Mission

    • The San Gabriel Mission is one of the most popular places to visit in San Gabriel. The mission was founded in 1771, by Father Junipero Serra. It was the fourth of the more than 20 missions built in California. Visit the mission compound to get a glimpse into what life was like at the mission in the late 18th century. To the north of the mission, you will find the mission cemetery and the last pepper tree from the original plantings along Mission Drive.

    San Gabriel Mission Playhouse

    • If you have time while visiting San Gabriel, see a play in the historic San Gabriel Mission Playhouse. Built by playwright John Steven McGroarty for his "Mission Play," the story of the California missions, the playhouse was officially dedicated in 1927. The playhouse now hosts diverse events year-round including Chinese classical ballet, classical symphonies, mariachi bands and even Broadway shows. The playhouse is also home to one of the finest theater organs in the country.

    Historic Walking Tour

    • To get a feel for this historic city, take a historic walking tour of San Gabriel. On the tour, you will see the San Gabriel Mission District. The Mission District has many old and beautiful buildings. For instance, you will see the Hayes House. The house was built in 1887 by George Findley Bovard, who later became the chancellor of the University of Southern California. Also on the tour is Plaza Park, home to the Bicentennial Fountain and Bell Tower. In addition, you will visit the arcade shops, a great place to shop and pick up a last minute souvenir.
