The city is about 200 miles north of Lansing, Michigan and is a summer resort area with beaches and a wealth of opportunity for outdoor recreational activities.
Traverse City was first settled in the mid-19th century and became an agricultural area which is now the largest producer of tart cherries in the United States. According to the area's visitor bureau, the area produces nearly 75 percent of all tart cherries in the country. Additionally, at the end of the 19th century, the area became a summer resort, with visitors coming from Chicago and Detroit, both nearly 300 miles away. The area's economy is mainly supported by tourism, which the city has combined with their agriculture; the annual cherry festival in June draws more than 500,000 tourists.
The Baymont Inn & Suites is located in the southern part of Traverse City, approximately 3 miles from the waterfront. It is in a major shopping area, within walking distance of the Grand Traverse Mall and across the street from Sam's Club and other retail stores. The hotel is approximately 5 miles from the airport.
