Traverse City prides itself as the "cherry capital of the world" with a dizzying display of blossoms in the spring followed by the summer harvest. Hikers flock to nearby Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore for expansive views of Lake Michigan. While there is only one traditional hostel in the area, there are other options similar to the hostel experience both in cost and accommodation.

    • Located just west of Traverse City, this hostel sits on the edge of a 40-acre lake surrounded by woods. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is just 14 miles away, and visitors have easy access to the Lake Ann Pathway-Chain-of-Lakes trail. The hostel is open year round, and in the winter, welcomes snowmobile enthusiasts. Backpackers are welcome; individuals can stay in shared rooms, and larger groups can rent a bunkhouse that sleeps up to eight. Rates are from $16 for a single person (as of May 2010).

    Traverse City KOA

    • Just 15 minutes south of downtown Traverse City, the KOA is situated in a country setting. The area boasts fruit orchards and wineries, and is close to Grand Traverse Bay. While the facility caters largely to RV and tent campers, it also offers hostel-type accommodations. One room "kamping kabins" sleep up to four people. Bedding is not furnished. The facility features a heated pool, bike rentals and volleyball courts and is open from early May to mid October. Rates are from $50 per cabin (as of May 2010).

    Rapid River Campground and Cabins

    • The Rapid River Campground is located just 25 minutes northeast of Traverse City, and offers four cabins that can sleep up to eight. The river and nearby lakes offer opportunities for canoeing. The Mackinaw Bridge, which connects Michigan's southern and northern sections, is just a little over an hour away. The campground is open year round, and there are snowmobile trails and downhill skiing venues nearby. Rates are from $70 per cabin (as of May 2010).
