Things to Do in Sanibel Island, Florida

Sanibel Island is located on the western side of Florida along the Gulf Coast. A unique peninsula, its east/west positioning makes it possible to sustain sandy beaches and an abundance of shells, according to the Sanibel & Captiva Islands Chamber of Commerce. In addition to the area’s beauty, Sanibel Island’s shelling, national park and museum make it a getaway destination appropriate for families and couples alike.

  1. Shelling

    • Shelling is a popular activity on Sanibel, as more than 250 types of shells show up on the island’s shores. The best time of day to look for shells is at low tide. Shells are particularly plentiful during spring’s new and full moon and after storms in the Gulf of Mexico. Tips to get the most out of your shelling include wearing water shoes, using a net to pick up the shells, and shuffling your feet to scare away any fish or wildlife in the water or sand. There is no limit to the number of shells you can collect, but you should be mindful that this is one of the area’s natural resources. The State of Florida prohibits the collection of any shells that appear to house any live or dead inhabitants.

    Darling National Wildlife Reserve

    • Sanibel’s wildlife reserve encompasses more than 6,000 acres of land and swamps. It is home to native wildlife including raccoon, alligators and hundreds of bird species. The purpose of the reserve is to protect Sanibel’s habitat. Visitors can explore the area by car, foot, bike or kayak. The park also allows fishing. Additionally, the Reserve’s Education Center provides hands-on interactive exhibits for all ages. The best times to visit are at high tide, early morning and late afternoon, according to Frommer’s. The reserve is open year-round with the exception of Federal holidays. The Wildlife Drive road closes every Friday. Admittance fees vary.

    Sanibel Historical Museum & Village

    • The Sanibel Historical Museum & Village consists of seven relocated and restored buildings showing the pioneer life of some of the area’s first settlers. The buildings date from the 1890s to the 1940s. The buildings depict the area’s post office, general store, children's school and a Florida “cracker” house. The village hosts annual seasonal events including an art fair and a shell wreath sale. Admission is required for those 18 and over, while anyone younger gets in for free. The museum operates from November through August.
