Fun Things for Kids to do in Columbus, Indiana

Located approximately 40 miles south of Indianapolis, Columbus, Indiana is a beautiful city to explore. Nationally recognized for its architectural history and design, this small southern Indiana community attracts hundreds of visitors annually. There are many sights for young visitors to discover, as well.

  1. Kidscommons

    • Kidscommons is an interactive museum that offers children three levels of hands-on activities and exploration. A giant toilet is the popular attraction at the Explora House exhibit, while a climbing wall, light space play wall and Hoop-it-up game educate guests about fitness. Other displays include Bubbology, Our House, Childhood Garden, Kids-at-Art and Storytelling kiosks. Kidscommons offers special group programming and party rentals. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday. It is closed Mondays and select holidays.

    Zaharakos

    • Located less than one block from Kidscommons, Zaharakos is fun for kids of all ages. A favorite ice cream parlor and museum, this Columbus, Indiana landmark has been a part of Washington Street since 1900. Zaharakos is open seven days a week and offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu includes bagels, soups, sandwiches, salads, old fashioned soda and a variety of ice cream treats. Rare items from the 1800s including a restored 1870s orchestrion and a large collection of marble soda fountains are featured in the museum.

    Freedom Field

    • Children can run, slide and climb at the one-and-a-half acre Freedom Field playground. Located at Chapman T. Blackwell Park in Columbus, this all-inclusive play area was specially designed for physically challenged and able-bodied children to play outdoors together. There are two primary play areas, a large section designed for older children and a separate portion for toddlers. The surrounding park includes soccer fields and basketball courts.
