Sushi Restaurants Close to Macomb, Michigan

Macomb Township is a small community approximately 20 miles north of Detroit, with an area of only 36 square miles. For tourists, the Macomb area features attractions like Macomb Corners Park, Metro Beach Metropark, the Plaster Playhouse and Westview Orchards & Cider Mill.


Visitors with a craving for sushi can choose from several Japanese restaurants located within 30 minutes of the township.

  1. Umi Sushi

    • Umi Sushi is in the Cherry Creek Mall in Shelby Township, which is roughly 13 miles from Macomb (approximately 23 minutes by automobile). The restaurant features a sushi bar and a dining room, with Asian-inspired paper lanterns hanging overhead.

      Sushi rolls are the specialty of the house; more than 60 varieties are available, including vegetarian options. A signature roll is the Julian Drum, named after local celebrity Julian Pavone, a musical child prodigy who was offered a place on the Cleveland Cavaliers' drumline when he was only 15 months old. It contains cooked shrimp, cucumber and carrots, and has sesame seeds sprinkled on the outside.

      The menu also features teriyaki, hibachi and other Japanese entrees. The restaurant does not serve alcohol.

      Umi Sushi serves lunch Monday through Saturday, and dinner nightly. Reservations are not required. Business casual attire is appropriate. The restaurant offers monthly specials, such as "buy one, get one free" sushi rolls.

    Shogun Japanese Steak House

    • Shogun Japanese Steak House is on Hall Road, across from the Mall at Parkridge in Macomb. It's primarily a teppanyaki restaurant, where chefs prepare grilled entrees in front of diners seated at hibachi tables. However, it also has a sushi bar, and diners can order sushi at the hibachi table if others in their group would like teppanyaki.

      The sushi menu includes 19 nigiri selections like sweet shrimp and smelt roe, and 19 maki rolls, including a "spider roll" made with softshell crab. Vegetarian sushi rolls are also available. The restaurant has a full bar.

      Shogun Japanese Steak House is open daily for lunch and dinner. Reservations are suggested, particularly for large groups. Casual attire is acceptable.

    Yorokobi Sushi‎

    • Yorokobi Sushi is on South Main Street in Romeo, which is about 16 miles from Macomb (approximately 27 minutes by automobile). A sushi bar and tables are available for seating. The sushi menu features 17 nigiri items, and 34 maki rolls. The signature roll is the Yorokobi, which contains fried rice, spicy tuna and jalapenos topped in garlic sauce. Other items on the menu include pasta, burgers, salads and fish tacos. There's also a children's menu, which features a peanut butter and jelly sushi roll.

      As of September 2010, the restaurant was in the process of obtaining its license to serve alcohol. Yorokobi Sushi serves lunch Tuesday through Saturday, and dinner nightly. The restaurant closes every Monday. Reservations are accepted. Casual attire is the norm. Free wireless Internet access is available.
