There are many things for kids and families to do in Albany, New York. Activities ranging from visiting historic sites to hands-on museum fun to exploring a unique eco-system are available. Albany is the state capital of New York. It was originally settled by the Dutch in the mid 1600s, an influence that continues in modern times with regards to the names of streets and neighborhoods.
Much of the Albany area at one time was a part of "the vast landholding called the Manor or Patroonship of Rensselaerswyck." Crailo was at one time the home of Hendrick Van Rensselaer, grandson of the original patroon. This plantation was named after the original farm back in Europe; it has had many additions to the original house and many different uses, including being a boarding school for boys in the 1840s. Here it is possible to see what colonial Dutch life was like with artifacts found during geological digs at Albany's Fort Orange. Open Wednesday through Sunday, from mid April through October 31st, admission fees are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors/students. Children ages 12 and under are free. (Fees current as of March 2010.)
