California is a great place to plan a vacation, especially if you have a passion for the outdoors and wilderness. The state offers several fishing, hiking and water activities for families to enjoy. Affordable vacations always are in demand, and there are numerous camping facilities spread across various locations. There is a little bit of everything available for all types of vacations in California.
Plan a trip to Shelter Cove if you are looking for a great camping and fishing vacation in California. Isolated and lacking everything that industrializes a place is where you will find Shelter Cove. Off of the coast of the Pacific Ocean is an area called the Lost Coast, and snuggled in there is Shelter Cove, all by itself. Access to this location is difficult, at best, if you do not take it slow and easy. The fishing makes it all worth it as the waters are filled with salmon, perch and rock fish. Because of the isolated location, the winds do not limit small boat access. Camping is your only option at Shelter Cove, although there are rentals and charters available. The campground features an ocean view and offers nearly 100 campsites with full hookups. Site amenities include picnic tables, fire pits, a small store that sells the basics, a restaurant, bathrooms, laundry facilities and showers. A tackle shop is located nearby. While organized activities are somewhat limited, there is a nearby park, Mal Coobs, where tourists can enjoy the tide pool and barbecue at the Seal Rock Picnic Area, where you will have a first-rate look at the sea lions and seals. Hiking is available across King Crest Trail and Black Sands Beach.

Shasta Lake is situated in Northern California, about 10 miles north of the city of Redding. Shasta Lake offers some of the most gorgeous views of this out-of-the-way California paradise. The lake was formed by natural damming of California rivers, and the fishing is some of the finest that California has to offer. Be prepared to catch plenty of spotted bass, large-mouth and small-mouth bass, catfish, different types of trout, sunfish and all kinds of salmon. Rarer breeds such as Black Bass also are abundant. Spend the day catching your dinner while camping on one of the private campgrounds. There are campsites with full hookups and primitive tent sites. There also are campsites that are near the boat access. Tours at Shasta Dam are available, and a trip to the Carter House Natural Science Museum is a must-see activity.
