Collins Lake, California Campgrounds

Collins Lake is nestled amid the rugged foothills of California's Gold Country, off state Route 20, about 50 miles northeast of Sacramento. The lake—which is actually a man-made reservoir—was created in 1963 with the building of the Virginia Ranch Dam. Since then, Collins Lake has become a popular fishing and camping destination with more than 12 miles of shoreline and 1,600 acres of trout-planted lake. Campers camp at the Collins Lake Recreation Area, the only campground and marina available at the lake.

  1. General Info

    • The Collins Lake Recreation Area is gated. Gates open at dawn, year round, and stay open until dusk in the off season and 10 p.m. during the summer. The recreation area includes a boat launch, marina, swimming beach, general store, and picnic areas.

Collins Lake is stocked each spring with trout. Fisherman may catch trout, spotted bass, catfish, crappie or bluegill in the lake.

There are nearly 200 individual campsites. Most of the sites near the general store have free Wi-Fi. Campers also have access to a laundry and hot showers.

    Group Camping

    • Groups may camp at Lakeview, Water's Edge, Retreat Group, Upper Meadow and Lower Meadow. Each group camping site includes picnic tables and barbecues. These campsites require a minimum deposit as well as a minimum number of people to reserve.

Lakeview has space for up to 12 RVs with hookups (water and electricity). Tent camping is permitted.

Water's Edge can hold up to 10 small motor homes (under 25 feet). Tent trailers, campers and tents are also permitted. Water's Edge is the closest camping area to the lake.

Retreat Group, Upper Meadow and Lower Meadow are tent-camping sites only. Retreat can accommodate 10-14 tents and up to 24 people.

Upper Meadow and Lower Meadow can accommodate three to four families.

    Individual Sites

    • There are 150 developed sites around the west side of Collins Lake. Camping is not permitted on the east side. The developed sites include hookups for water and electricity. Some sites have sewer hookup for RVs. There are 30 undeveloped sites for tent camping. Reservations are suggested during prime season and a two-night minimum (three during holiday weekends) is required.

Camping rates vary depending on the amenities at each site and the season. Nightly, weekly and monthly rates are offered. Sites begin at $20 a night in the off season and run as high as $49 a night during prime season. Rates are based on one vehicle and up to four people per site. There are additional charges for extra vehicles and additional campers. There is also a reservation fee and an additional fee for late check outs.

The recreation area offers special deals for camping and marina slip use. Groups may take advantage of group rates and day use rates. Annual passes are also available. Seniors (60+) and military personnel are eligible for a $2 per night discount.
