Downtown Detroit Restaurants

Each year, more than 15 million tourists visit the city of Detroit, reports the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau. Downtown Detroit is home to a number of attractions for such tourists, including the Detroit Opposite, the Capital Park Historic District and Comerica Park, the home Major League Baseball's Detroit Tigers. Visitors to the downtown area have a variety of attractions to choose from, ranging from casual delicatessens to upscale cafes.

    • EPH's Downtown is just three blocks from Hart Plaza, which is known for its outdoor ice-skating rink. An Irish delicatessen, EPH's is known for its hand-carved roast beef brisket, corned beef, ham and hard salami imported from Ireland or roasted onsite. One of its specialty sandwiches is the "Majestic," which consists of corned beef, smoked turkey, cheddar cheese and Russian dressing on a house-baked onion roll. To accompany the sandwich, diners can opt for one of the soups of the day, creamy or vinaigrette coleslaw, cucumbers in sour cream and potato salad. Save room for dessert to sample the signature bread pudding, served hot and smothered in Irish whiskey sauce. EPH's Downtown is open daily for lunch and dinner. The restaurant does not have a dress code. Metered spots and pay parking garages are located nearby.

    Opus One

    • Specializing primarily in French and American cuisine, Opus One is just two blocks from the University of Detroit. As of April 2010, Zagat rated the restaurant "very good to excellent" for its food, decor and service. Nine appetizers lead the menu, such as the smoked salmon and goat chevre lollipops, the shrimp in phylo dough adorned with Bearnaise sauce or the petite truffled baked potatoes topped with creme fraiche and parmesan cheese. A specialty of the house is the lamb a la Greque, New Zealand-raised eight-piece rack accompanied with potato-fennel gratin and wilted spinach seasoned with garlic. The restaurant's extensive wine list has received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence annually since the restaurant opened in 1987. Opus One serves lunch on Thursdays and Fridays and is open nightly for dinner. Reservations are required, and diners can make reservations online as well as by telephone. Business casual attire is appropriate. Valet and metered street parking are available.

    Sweet Lorraine's Cafe & Bar

    • Sweet Lorraine's Cafe & Bar is a family-owned restaurant with three locations in Michigan, including a downtown Detroit restaurant. Its locations is inside of the Courtyard Marriott, which is adjacent to the Du Mouchelle Art Galleries and the Renaissance Center shopping area. Zagat rated the restaurant's food, service and decor "very good to excellent" as of April 2010. The restaurant's dinner menu is eclectic with selections including home-style beef pot roast, vegetarian jambalaya, chicken and Gorgonzola pasta, yellow fin tuna fajitas and tilapia fish and chips. The wine list features more than 50 domestic and imported selections. Sweet Lorraine's Cafe & Bar is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Reservations are recommended for dinner and can be made over the phone or online. Casual attire is the norm when dining at the restaurant. A children's menu is available for young diner's. Metered street parking is offered near the cafe.
